Ultralight Crampons Test: The Best Options for Ski Touring

Aluminum crampons are sufficient for the vast majority of conditions encountered in ski touring. These models offer a significant weight savings compared to steel crampons. Of course, they reach their limits when snow turns to hard ice. Hybrid models also exist, featuring a steel front section—or sometimes only a few steel points. Often based on aluminum designs, they offer a solid compromise if you plan to tackle more technical terrain.

Attachment and adjustment systems vary widely between models and have a major impact on usability. Front or rear lever, pin binding, automatic adjustment, screws… You’ll find detailed insights on all of these in our tests.

Another key factor to consider is the presence—or absence—of an anti-balling system. In certain snow conditions, crampons without anti-botte plates can quickly become a nightmare.
