CAMP XLC 90

OUR TEST OF THE CAMP XLC 390

MANUFACTURER’S OPINION

The CAMP XLC 90 is one of the lightest crampons ever designed for ski touring and fast alpine races. Entirely made of 7075 aluminum alloy, it combines rigidity, durability, and featherweight, with only 330 grams per pair. Its minimalist design is the result of precise engineering work, where each component is optimized to offer maximum performance on hard snow and moderate ice without unnecessary overload.

The manufacturing of the XLC 90 begins with the digital cutting of high-strength aluminum plates. The parts are then cold-formed and anodized to increase corrosion resistance and limit wear. CAMP relies on a design with nine sharp points, crafted to ensure effective grip in couloirs or on icy traverses, while maintaining sufficient flexibility for ski touring. The front and rear parts are connected by an adjustable central bar, more classic than the cable system, but optimized for simplicity and reliability in the mountains.

The automatic bindings of the XLC 90 use a steel front bail and an aluminum rear lever, ensuring excellent compatibility with boots with a welt. The whole is hand-assembled, then subjected to traction and bending tests to guarantee the strength of each crampon before boxing. This rigorous control process reflects CAMP’s philosophy: to produce ultra-light equipment without compromising on safety.

Designed for minimalist mountaineers and skiers, the CAMP XLC 90 is primarily intended for snowy terrains, glaciers, and races where speed and lightness are paramount. Its aluminum construction requires avoiding prolonged contact with rock, but on its field of expression — snow and soft ice — it offers remarkable stability and grip for an almost imperceptible weight.
