MANUFACTURER’S OPINION

The Blue Ice Harfang Alpine Hybrid is a modern crampon designed for demanding mountaineers and skiers who seek an ideal combination of lightness, compactness, and efficiency on technical terrain. Made with the same focus on innovation as the rest of the Harfang range, this model adopts a hybrid construction that combines steel and aluminum, a choice designed to offer the necessary strength on ice and rock while maintaining a very low weight — about 480 grams per pair. Designed and assembled in Chamonix, it perfectly embodies the artisanal know-how and minimalist spirit of Blue Ice.

The manufacturing of the Harfang Alpine Hybrid relies on a precise and sustainable production process. The front part in stainless steel is cut and hot-forged, then hardened to ensure optimal hardness and powerful grip on ice. The rear points and heel piece, on the other hand, are machined in anodized aluminum, allowing weight reduction without compromising stability. The metal elements are connected by the famous central textile strap in UHMWPE, an ultra-resistant fiber polymer also used in mountaineering and competitive sailing. This flexible link replaces the traditional rigid bar and gives the crampon its exceptional flexibility and compactness: the Harfang Alpine Hybrid can be folded and stored in a pocket or a small provided storage bag.

The final assembly is done manually in the Blue Ice workshops, where each pair is tested to check the strap tension, point alignment, and compatibility with bindings. The automatic and semi-automatic system allows adaptation to most technical shoes with a rim, whether for mountaineering or ski touring. The anodized finish protects the aluminum parts against corrosion, while the front steel receives a reinforced anti-corrosion treatment for better longevity.

In the field, the Harfang Alpine Hybrid is particularly comfortable in mixed conditions: glacier crossings, hard snow couloirs, or steep ice passages. The front steel points ensure a firm and stable grip, while the lightness of the whole limits fatigue during long ascents. The flexibility of the central strap improves walking ergonomics and offers superior comfort compared to traditional rigid crampons.
