OUR TEST OF THE BLUE ICE HARFANG ALPINE

MANUFACTURER’S OPINION
The Blue Ice Harfang Alpine is a high-end technical crampon designed for classic mountaineering, glacier routes, and mixed snow and ice ascents. Inspired by the brand’s Chamonix expertise, it adopts the modular and compact concept of the Harfang range while featuring an all-chromoly steel construction, synonymous with robustness and efficiency on the most demanding terrains. Weighing approximately 570 grams per pair, it manages to maintain remarkable lightness for an all-steel model, while ensuring exceptional grip and durability.
The manufacturing of the Harfang Alpine is based on a precise and demanding process. Each component is cut and forged from high-quality steel, before being hardened to achieve the necessary hardness for ice penetration. The surfaces are then machined and polished, and treated against corrosion to withstand moisture and temperature variations in high mountains. As with other models in the range, the connection between the front and rear parts is made via a UHMWPE textile strap — an ultra-resistant, lightweight, and flexible polymer — which replaces the traditional rigid bar. This system gives the crampon a natural flexibility and remarkable compactness, allowing it to be folded and easily stored in a bag without losing its solidity once assembled.
The Harfang Alpine’s bindings adopt a universal automatic and semi-automatic system, compatible with most technical mountaineering boots. The front part features aggressive and precise points, offering secure grip on hard ice and excellent support on steep slopes. The final assembly is done manually in the Blue Ice workshops in Chamonix, where each pair is checked to ensure the symmetry of the points, the correct tension of the strap, and the reliability of the rear lever.
In the field, the Harfang Alpine impresses with its stability and rigidity, while remaining comfortable to walk in thanks to its flexible connection. It excels in mixed routes, icy ridges, and hard snow approaches. The precision of its anchoring and the strength of its steel make it a trusted tool for mountaineers who seek reliability above all, without sacrificing lightness and compactness.
The Blue Ice Harfang Alpine embodies the essence of modern equipment: robust, functional, and minimalist. Carefully crafted, designed to last and perform, it illustrates Blue Ice’s technical mastery in the field of mountain crampons. It is an ideal companion for those who want to climb fast and light, but with the security and solidity of a reference steel crampon.
