OUR REVIEW OF THE ELAN RIPSTICK TOUR 88
Elan updates the structure of its Ripstick Tour 88 this season with a significant weight change. Indeed, we go from 2700g per pair to 2500g on our scale. We find ourselves in the lower range of the category with the possibility of considering very large elevation gains. Despite identical sidecuts and shape, the behavior is noticeably different on descent with this new structure but in a good way. Indeed, the new version is more accessible and less physical. In deep and soft snow, it performs particularly well with an almost flat camber that compensates for a rather discreet rocker. The Ripstick floats correctly and is particularly stable at high speed while maintaining good maneuverability and above all a lot of fun. For skiers who ski at a more relaxed pace, it remains very nice and pivots on its own when necessary. It also surprisingly smooths out the terrain well for the width with good management of snow changes. The snow feel is also pleasant with good cushioning. An excellent behavior for most conditions encountered in touring. In spring snow, it is also effective with good grip and a healthy behavior in carved turns even if it excels less than in soft snow. To summarize, a ski that stands out with a shape that is ultimately quite uncommon for its waist width and that provides both fun behavior in powder and efficiency in spring conditions.
MANUFACTURER’S OPINION
The Ripstick goes into touring mode with the Elan Ripstick Tour 88: Elan unveils a new range of touring skis for the 21/22 season, named Ripstick Tour. It was created to bridge the gap between downhill freeride performance and uphill efficiency. The new Carbon Bridge technology is a solution where a single carbon rod placed on the top of the ski ensures stability, damping, and vibration absorption by the tip. The weight reduction was made possible by a new ABS. Surrounding the ski in a pyramidal shape, it gives the ski the shape of a slim but solid instrument. Additionally, thanks to extra reinforcement underfoot, resistance has been improved, allowing it to adapt to new hybrid bindings. The skis are paired with skins – a hybrid technology, and lightweight bindings, developed by ATK for ELAN. There are 4 models: the Ripstick Tour 88 (2500g – 170cm) / 88 women (2340g – 163cm) (599 €); 94 / 94 women (649 €). The Ripstick Tour 88 weighs 2500g in 170cm. It is available in 5 sizes from 156cm to 184cm.
