OUR TEST OF THE ZAG UBAC 95
The Ubac 95 strikes a balance between the 102 mm version, which leans heavily toward freeride, and the more accessible 89 mm model. That said, it still delivers a performance-oriented ride, requiring a decent level of fitness both uphill and downhill. Weighing in at 3140 g in 178 cm (versus the 2860 g stated by the brand), it’s not the lightest in its class, but with a lightweight binding setup, it can still handle substantial elevation gains. It’s worth noting that Zag has prioritized durability, using thicker edges than average for this category, and a robust construction with ABS sidewalls—hence the slightly higher weight. In deep snow, the generous rocker allows for effortless floatation. At higher speeds, the ski maintains solid stability and handles tracked snow well, delivering a ride that feels close to a freeride ski. Strong skiers will appreciate its powerful feel. Compared to its narrower sibling with 89 mm underfoot, the Ubac 95 is more powerful and more physical. You can feel the added inertia and weight underfoot. Edge grip is decent, though not exceptional, and the same goes for spring snow or groomed pistes—it does the job, but that’s not where it truly excels. All things considered, the Ubac 95 is a versatile, all-around touring ski, best suited for committed, confident skiers looking for a blend of power, float, and reliability.
MANUFACTURER’S OPINION
The Zag Ubac 95 is the ultimate versatile touring ski, praised by mountain guides for its ability to excel in all conditions. With its 95 mm underfoot, it guarantees excellent performance on all types of terrain, while maintaining a light weight of only 1430 g in 178 cm, ideal for long backcountry outings. The Zag Ubac 95 remains playful and accessible, while allowing for fast and strong skiing on the descent. Designed and manufactured in Europe, it also stands out for its environmental commitment: 50% bio-sourced materials (including a 25% plant-based resin), recycled metal edges, a black base made of 85% recycled materials, and packaging in organic cotton. The Zag Ubac 95 combines performance, lightness, and eco-design, for demanding skiers looking for a reliable, durable, and high-performing touring ski.
