Zag Ubac 89

OUR TEST OF THE ZAG UBAC 89

This is our favorite version in the Ubac range, and the most touring-oriented. The Ubac 89 performs particularly well in soft snow for its width. In powder, it floats nicely and remains stable when picking up the pace. All of this comes with accessible handling and low physical demand—unlike the wider versions. It’s easy to get used to, and you don’t need to go fast to enjoy it, though it can still handle speed while remaining comfortable and stable.
Its weight is reasonable for how it skis, even if it’s on the higher end of the category. At 2900 g per pair in 176 cm, you’ll want to pair it with a lightweight binding if you’re planning big ascents or if you’re not in top shape.
It’s also worth noting that Zag prioritized durability, with thicker edges than the category average and a robust ABS sidewall construction—a smart choice given how rocky many descents have become. On groomers and spring snow, it carves and pivots easily and is relatively fun. On hardpack, grip doesn’t blow you away, but it gets the job done safely. In short, a versatile and reliable ski.

MANUFACTURER’S OPINION

The lightest and narrowest model in the range, the Zag UBAC 89 is designed for those looking to venture far and long into the backcountry. It retains the iconic DNA of the UBAC range, offering authentic freeride sensations and excellent downhill performance. Thanks to remarkable flex stiffness, it also excels on hard snow, ensuring powerful grip even on the steepest slopes. With a featherweight of only 1300 g in 176 cm, it combines performance and maneuverability. This ski is also part of an eco-friendly approach thanks to the use of sustainable materials: 50% of its components are bio-sourced, including a resin with 25% plant origin, edges made from recycled metal, a black base containing 85% recycled materials, and packaging in organic cotton. Made in Europe, the UBAC 89 embodies the perfect balance between mountain efficiency and environmental respect.
