PLUM SERAK 8 ST (DIN 8 with ski brakes)

OUR REVIEW OF THE PLUM SERAK BINDING

The Serak is an evolution of the Oazo, featuring Plum’s latest innovations. The main differences lie in the addition of a new rear compensation system that allows the heel unit to move with the ski’s flex, and an entirely redesigned toe piece. The latter offers much easier step-in β€” something clearly confirmed during our testing: engagement requires less effort, and even without a positioning shim, the Serak is exceptionally easy to clip into. Otherwise, the binding remains similar to the Oazo, with a fixed vertical release (4, 6, or 8, depending on the chosen version) inspired by race models, paired with a lateral release adjustable from 4 to 10. It also features new-generation risers that are easy to operate with a ski pole, except when switching from flat to riser mode, which still requires rotating the heel piece. The same lightweight ski brake is included β€” just 140 g per pair β€” simple to use and even operable one-handed with a bit of practice. A small raised edge on the black locking flap could make switching between uphill and downhill modes even smoother, but that’s a minor detail. Its main advantage remains its easy removal: a single screw lets you detach it to adapt to conditions. Despite these added features, the Serak weighs only 30 g more than the Oazo, so it’s well worth choosing if the price difference isn’t an issue.

MANUFACTURER’S OPINION

The SERAK binding embodies the natural evolution of the famous OAZO, with concrete improvements that enhance both safety, ease of use, and versatility. Completely redesigned, the front toe piece has been optimized to offer even more intuitive step-in, making handling smoother, even in difficult snow or slope conditions. On the heel side, the addition of a compensation system allows for better ski flex tracking while ensuring reliable release, for increased safety on the descent.

Weighing only 290 g per foot, the SERAK remains true to the PLUM spirit: minimalist, yet ultra-performing. Three versions are offered – SERAK 4, 6, and 8 – with a fixed frontal release (F) of 4, 6, or 8, combined with an adjustable lateral release (L) from 4 to 10, allowing each skier to choose the model best suited to their practice and morphology.

On the ascent, the SERAK offers three heel riser positions – 0, 41, and 54 mm – allowing the walking angle to be adapted to the terrain’s relief. Knife supports are integrated into the binding, ensuring direct compatibility with PLUM models, while a 20 mm adjustment rail allows the binding to be adjusted to different sole lengths, a valuable asset for sharing equipment or variable insert boots.

The binding is also available with or without ski brakes, with several widths offered (80, 90, 100, and 110 mm), to suit the majority of current touring skis. Resolutely designed for regular practitioners seeking reliability, lightness, and ease of use, the SERAK offers a modern, accessible, and evolved alternative, without compromising on manufacturing quality.
