OUR TEST OF THE BLACK DIAMOND HELIO CARBON 95
This is the most versatile model in the new Helio range. The Helio 95 is equally at home in deep snow as it is in more challenging conditions. It offers good edge grip, allowing for effective carving turns. While it’s not the liveliest ski on groomers, it remains stable and easy to handle. Its behavior is especially forgiving and low-effort, making it ideal for touring use, particularly when you’re descending after a tiring climb. It’s also worth noting that the snow feel is much softer and more refined than in the previous version. Powder is clearly the Helio 95’s natural playground, as expected for a ski of this width. Floatation is excellent, and even at high speed, it stays stable and nimble. In short, it’s a reliable go-to ski. And the cherry on top: the weight is spot on. At 2700 g per pair in 176 cm, it’s at the lighter end of its category. The weight-to-performance ratio is simply outstanding—so if you’re tired on the climb, you’ll need to find another excuse!
MANUFACTURER’S OPINION
Designed for high mountain adventure, the Black Diamond Helio Carbon 95 stands out as an ultra-versatile touring ski, capable of excelling both uphill and downhill. Positioned at the heart of the Helio Carbon range, it is designed to meet the needs of skiers who want lightweight, reliable equipment without compromising on downhill performance. From the steep slopes of the Alps to the great traverses of the Rockies or the Andes, the Helio Carbon 95 is a choice companion, balanced and remarkably efficient.
With its 95 mm underfoot, it offers a perfect ratio between flotation in fresh snow and maneuverability on hard snow or technical terrain. Its tip rocker promotes good lift, facilitates turn initiation, and improves skiability on changing snow, while its progressive shape allows for excellent responsiveness and intuitive handling. Whether you’re in powder, crusty snow, or heavy spring snow, this ski adapts smoothly.
The Black Diamond Helio Carbon 95 is built around a paulownia wood core, combining lightness and liveliness. This core is reinforced by a pre-impregnated carbon fiber structure, which offers controlled lateral stiffness and excellent energy transfer. The integrated ABS sidewalls around the entire circumference of the ski increase durability and improve grip on hard snow. To secure the mounting, a Titanal plate has been integrated under the binding, ensuring reliability even on steep slopes.
Another practical detail: the heel is equipped with an ABS notch designed for optimal skin retention, even in cold conditions or during quick transitions. All this in a weight of 1,395 g at 178 cm, allowing for smooth ascents without sacrificing downhill stability.
If you’re looking for a touring ski capable of doing it all, in all conditions, the Black Diamond Helio Carbon 95 is for you. Agile uphill, smooth downhill, it adapts to all adventures: from spring skiing on transformed snow to long outings in high mountains. A playful, powerful, reliable ski – the reference for versatile skiers who want to carve their own line without limits.
