OUR REVIEW OF THE ATOMIC BACKLAND XTD CARBON 120 BOOT
MANUFACTURER’S OPINION
Atomic now offers its famous Backland boot in an XTD version that stands out for its improved downhill performance, while maintaining appreciable comfort and lightness during ascents. With a width of 100 mm (compared to 98 mm for other models in the Backland range), this boot is particularly interesting for intermediate-shaped feet.
The Backland XTD features the Cross Lace 2.5 closure system, which completely wraps the foot by passing the cable through the buckle, ensuring effective and precise tightening. Thanks to the Free/Lock 4.5 ski/walk mechanism combined with the Frictionless Pivot, the boot’s cuff benefits from a natural range of motion of 74°, offering smooth and effortless mobility while walking in the mountains.
For optimal comfort throughout the day while hiking, the Backland XTD is equipped with a breathable and washable 3D Platinum Tour liner, which evenly wraps the foot. This liner also incorporates Dry Fit foam, ensuring effective moisture management.
The new Prolite construction of the boot makes it more stable thanks to the addition of strategically placed reinforcements in the critical areas of the lower shell and the top of the cuff. Despite this improvement in stability, the Backland XTD retains great agility, offering balanced performance on all terrains.
The Backland XTD is available in four different versions, adapted to different levels of flex and shell materials:
BACKLAND XTD CARBON 120: With a stated flex of 120, this version is ideal for skiers looking for a stiff boot. It weighs 2760 g per pair in size 26.5.
BACKLAND XTD CARBON 120 GW: Similar to the previous version in terms of flex (120), this variant is compatible with alpine Gripwalk bindings. It also weighs 2760 g per pair in size 26.5.
BACKLAND XTD 110: With a stated flex of 110, this version offers slightly lower flexibility but remains suitable for a wide range of skiers. It features a polyamide (PA) shell and weighs 1738 g per pair in size 26.5.
BACKLAND XTD 100: This version has a stated flex of 100 and features a polyurethane (PU) shell. It is designed for skiers looking for more moderate flexibility. Its weight is 3048 g per pair in size 26.5.
Regardless of the version chosen, the Backland XTD offers an exceptional combination of downhill performance, lightness, and comfort for demanding ski touring enthusiasts.
