When we talk about ski touring in Val d’Aran, it is generally the Baqueira-Beret ski resort area that immediately comes to mind. However, reducing the massif to its ski area would mean missing out on one of the most interesting playgrounds in the Pyrenees for local ski touring. Around Vielha, the possibilities are immense and above all extremely varied depending on the conditions, the season, or the mood of the moment.
The first asset of Val d’Aran is its rather unique geographical configuration in the Spanish Pyrenees. Unlike the majority of the southern slope, the valley is open to the north and drained by the Garonne which then flows towards France and the Atlantic. Result: the climate is much colder and wetter than in many other Spanish areas. Located in the heart of the range, Val d’Aran regularly benefits from disturbances coming from the north as well as from the west or south. Even during complicated winters, it is often possible to find good conditions with less than 30 minutes of driving from Vielha.
This is precisely what makes the area so interesting. Here, there is always a plan B. When snow is lacking at low altitude, several accesses allow you to start already high. Conversely, from the first autumn snowfalls, the many grassy slopes quickly become skiable without fearing the sharks. And when spring arrives, the northern orientations and high accesses often allow the season to be extended well after the resorts close.
Another interesting feature: the forest. In Val d’Aran, there are vast wooded areas that sometimes rise above 2200 meters in altitude, mainly composed of hook pines typical of the massif. A configuration that has become almost precious today. First, because it allows skiing even when the weather is bad, but above all because it remarkably protects the snow from the wind. However, windy episodes have become almost systematic in the Pyrenees in recent seasons. Being able to find good snow preserved in the trees when everything else has been ravaged is clearly one of the big strengths of the area.
