Skiing the Couloirs of Abruzzo

Les couloirs des Abruzzes (30)

When we think of Italy, we often picture the mountains of the north — the small and vast Alpine paradises — or the art cities of the south such as Florence, Siena, or Rome.
And yet, just a stone’s throw from the imperial capital of the Seven Hills, at the very heart of the Italian peninsula, rise the wild mountains of Abruzzo: an exceptional playground for ski touring and couloir skiing.

Here, skiers discover an unexpected alpine world — one of limestone ridges, secluded valleys, and couloirs carved into white rock, overlooking the sea: the Tyrrhenian to the west, the Adriatic to the east.

The Apennine range, Italy’s true backbone, reaches its highest point at Corno Grande, in the Gran Sasso massif. This slender limestone peak, brushing 3,000 meters, towers above the Adriatic Sea, only a few dozen kilometers away.
Around this giant, the mountains of Abruzzo form a collection of distinct massifs, where skiable slopes mingle with medieval villages and sunlit agricultural plains.
