Ski Touring Around Roc d’Enfer

Ski Touring Around Roc d’Enfer

Roc d’Enfer, a 2,244-meter peak, bears a name that cracks like thunder.
Known locally as Roc de l’Enfer by the people of Saint-Jean-d’Aulps, its steep slopes and infamous tendency to attract lightning once gave it a reputation as a cursed mountain. Officially located in the Chablais region, it also borders the Faucigny area—roughly the upper Arve Valley.

Surrounded by neighboring peaks and several ski areas, Roc d’Enfer is part of a network easily accessible to locals from Haute-Savoie.
And while the area is relatively well developed, many slopes remain untouched by ski lifts—much to the delight of ski tourers. In a previous issue (Ski Rando Magazine No. 41), we described the classic tour around Roc d’Enfer. This time, we’re diving deeper into the massif to explore more of what it has to offer.
