Bious Artigues: a different take on the Ossau

Bious Artigues: a different take on Ossau

When people talk about ski touring around the Pic du Midi d’Ossau, their attention generally turns to the Col du Pourtalet.
Easily accessible and close to the Spanish border, this area offers a high-altitude starting point that significantly shortens the approach. The result: heavy foot traffic, a sometimes crowded atmosphere, and a mostly south-facing exposure that doesn’t always allow for optimal snow conditions.

In contrast to this logic, the Bious-Artigues lake offers a radically different alternative.
Here, it’s the mountains in their wildest, most untouched form. Less frequented, this sector hides a wealth of lesser-known routes, offering breathtaking views of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau from unusual angles — a rare luxury in such an iconic mountain range.

But this tranquility comes at a price. In winter, the access road to the lake is closed and not cleared of snow, significantly extending the approach. The solution? Take out the bike. When snow conditions allow, this option is ideal: the road is in good shape, not too steep, but caution is still needed on icy patches, especially those exposed to the north. This unusual warm-up instantly adds a different flavor to the adventure.

Once you reach the lake, a vast and flexible playground opens up. On the southern slopes, the Pic d’Aule and Pic d’Auliou are perfect for spring outings, when the sun begins to soften the snow. Looking for dry, cold powder? Head for the Cornes de Moundelhs or the Embaradère cirque — true natural freezers.
